The beautiful ancient city of Leiria rests on the banks of the River Lis and was once the southernmost outpost of the Portuguese Kingdom. The town is perched over a series of picturesque hills and is noted for its beautiful architecture, historic buildings, and rich culture.

One of Leiria’s most popular tourist attractions is its castle, which has seen several generations of royalty rebuilding, remodelling and reinforcing its structure over the centuries in a variety of different styles. Standing proudly atop a hill, the looming castle dates back to medieval times and is an incredible example of Portuguesemilitary architecture. Within and surrounding the grounds, you’ll find a comprehensive museum, intricately decorated cathedrals and opulent palaces.

For such a wonderful destination you’d be forgiven for thinking it would be pretty hard on the old wallet, but fortunately for us travellers, it’s actually a lot cheaper than many other popular destinations in Europe. The even better news is that there are heaps ofbudget-friendly hostels in Leiria so backpacking here is a breeze. There’s also plenty ofAirbnb rentalsin the area too for an el cheapo trip away!

What You Can Expect from Hostels in Leiria

    Leiria Portugal

Leiria is a must-visit when you’re visiting Portugal with its Mediterranean climate, imposing castle, stunning architecture and laid back vibe. It’s definitely one of the top places to visit in Portugal if you’re searching for culture and scenery without the crowds.

The main thingyou’ll notice about the cityis that it has a great selection of reasonably-priced hostels especially compared to Lisbon, Porto and Madeira. This is in part as a result of the city being a little off the beaten track, which of course makes it all the more charming to visit. It’s one of the cheapest cities in Portugal to visit but still offers such a richness in experiences.

Many people who’ve never stayed in a hostel give them a bad time, but actually as seasoned hostel dwellers we’re here to tell you these misconceptions are completely wrong… especially here in Leiria which has some of the best hostels in Portugal.

The hostels here offer clean, comfortable and fun places to stay with added benefits like:

    • Games rooms
    • Common areas and gardens
    • Communal kitchens
    • On-site bars & restaurants
    • Laundry facilities

So it’s super easy to save even more money and socialise with other travellers.

Another misconception is that hostelling just means staying in a dorm. Whilst this might be the most cost-effective way of travelling and suits some people, it’s not the only option! Most hostels inLeiria offer private rooms too and some are even en-suite. So you get the best of both worlds compared to a hotel, you get cheaper prices and retain the social element of a hostel whilst keeping your privacy. It’s a win-win for us tbh!

Also, *spoiler alert*, one of these hostels even has a small swimming pool! Yeah, so you can forget when you think you knew about hostels and prepared to have something akin to a spiritual awakening! Ok, a bit dramatic but the hostels inLeiria might just change your life in a travelling kinda way!

If you’re a digital nomad, teaching English in Portugal or just travelling with a snazzy camera and a laptop then no dramas! The trusty hostel locker will keep your gear safe! What’s even better inLeiria is that many of the properties also havesecurity cameras and24-hr security. The town itself is super safe and pretty chill too so it’s not something you have to worry about. In fact, Portugal is mega safe as a whole.

WithLeiria being a pretty compact city most of the hostels here are right in the city centre so you can see everything on foot. If you do opt for somewhere a little further out, which is more common with the Airbnb options, you might just get a better deal but remember to factor in transport costs too.

When looking for hostels, you’ll find the best options on HOSTELWORLD. On their platform, you can easily filter hostels according to destination, and you are guaranteed a safe and fast booking process. You will find hostels with ratings and reviews from real travellers just like you, so make sure you check what they have to say before booking.
