Falling in love with the Lake district is easily done. Sadly, when you do, you often wake up 40 years later next to the first male, female or farm animal that you set eyes upon thereafter.

Thankfully, once you and your new sleepover buddy return to normal (and you slowly come to terms with your new life choices), you will inevitably agree that you had an excellent time.

My top class guide to where to stay in the Lake District contains quant villages, romantic getaways and some of the best hotels in the region. The rolling hills, swooping peaks and glistening tarns do the English countryside proper justice, and you won’t be disappointed by the landscape, whatever time you choose to visit.

So grab your wellies, sun cream and rose tinted glasses, because a truly historic holiday is about to be planned!

The Lake District can be unsettlingly beautiful, the way only English landscapes are…
