If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you may be aware that our writers and contributors frequently visit REI stores (both online and physical). We strongly believe that REI is one of the finest retailers of travel and outdoor equipment in the United States, if not globally, and their REI Co-Op division produces some of the best quality gear and travel products at a great value.

As a result, we’ve decided to put together a monthly list of the best gear available for sale at REI. This post will highlight some of the latest hits from REI Co-Op brands, as well as discounted offerings from well-known gear brands around the world.

The Broke Backpackers Monthly REI Round Up

To be frank, our team at Broke Backpacker is a little bit too much into travel and outdoor gear. Yes, we spend way too much time browsing through REI stores and their websites. Travel and adventure gear is a bit of a weakness of mine and I own more camping backpacks and outdoor jackets than I care to confess – my back room is bursting at the seams!

Despite my own impending financial ruin due to excessive gear shopping, I can at least share with you the benefit of our knowledge and highlight some of the best outdoor and travel gear available this April.

So, let’s jump right in!

Ladies & Gents, It’s Time to Step Your GEAR Game Up. 😉

REI Co-op Trailmade Rain Jacket

REI Co-op Trailmade Rain Jacket

I hail from the North of England (where it rains all the time, even indoors…), so am completely obsessed with rain jackets and consider myself something of an expert on the subject.

The new Trailmade jacket from REI is the ideal hiking companion. As its name suggests, it is a soft-shell mid-layer designed to shield you from any wind and light rain that you may encounter. The jacket is thicker than your typical windbreaker, using stretch double-weave nylon materials and a water-repellent coating, enabling you to withstand the elements more effectively than an average pull-over.

With a price tag of $99 and bluesign-approved materials, you can rest easy knowing that your hard-earned money is contributing to a worthwhile cause without putting a dent in your wallet.

Co-op Cycles Generation e1.2 Electric Bike

Co-op Cycles Generation e1.2 Electric Bike

The 2nd electric revolution is well and truly underway. And while you may not quite be able to afford a Tesla, an electric bike may well be within your price range especially now that you can save up to 30% as part of REI’s Spring Bike Sale!

The new model of the e-bike, the Generation e2.1, has a front rack and a more powerful battery compared to the previous e1.1. Its low stand-over height design allows for easy mounting and dismounting, and the upright riding position provides excellent visibility. The stem is adjustable, allowing for customization of the cockpit to fit the rider’s needs.. The Bafang 350W hub-drive motor offers a smooth ride with five pedal-assist modes, as well as a walk mode. Additionally, the Bafang 48V/14AH battery powers the bike and its lights, with a lock for security and the option to remove and charge at home or at work.

REI Co-Op Cycling Rain Jacket

REI Co-Op Cycling Rain Jacket

Need a new jacket to go with that new bike? Basically cycling is safe and fun in many different seasons and weather conditions and I have cycled in torrential rain downpours (just check the tyres and breaks before you start and be sensible). However, if you are out on the bile and it rains you really do wait to have a good waterproof jacket with you.

Now, regular rain jackets are all good and well but many of them tend to get a bit sweaty if you exert yourself while wearing them. The REI Co-Op Cycling Rain Jacket is waterproof, wind proof, breathable and best of all its bright yellow so motorists can easily spot you even in the reduced visibility that rain showers tend to cause. At $135 it is not cheap but is great value – similar products from top outdoor brands such as Patagonia and Arc’teryx are at least twice the price.

Arc’teryx Sabre AR Jacket – Men’s

Arc'teryx Sabre AR Jacket - Men's

Arc’teryx are one of the best high performance outdoor jacket brands in the world. While there gear does not come cheap, it just oozes quality. The Sabre AR is a serious piece of outdoor wear that is currently on sale with 20% of the price slashed off.

The jacket is built to withstand the toughest outdoor conditions, using durable GORE-TEX material with a 3-layer lo-loft soft-shell construction that provides both breathability and waterproof and windproof protection. It has a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish that effectively repels moisture. In the event of an emergency, the RECCO® reflector can assist with search and rescue. The jacket has a clean and unrestricted fit with articulated patterning, allowing freedom of movement and room for layers

REI Co-op Trailmade Print Trekking Poles

REI Co-op Trailmade Print Trekking Poles

If you haven’t experienced the joy of hiking with trekking poles, you’re missing out on a great aid. While not always essential, they are essentially an extra set of legs that can make the difference between hiking 40 miles versus 5 miles in a day. When you’re out in the backcountry with a 30-pound backpack on your back, trekking poles can help you maintain good posture (trust me, your lower back will thank you the next day) and offer extra stability on uneven terrain.

REI’s Trailmade Poles have foam grips, which I’ve come to prefer over cork grips over time, providing a comfortable companion for your hands during your trek. With their lightweight design and sturdy construction, the $69.95 price tag is more than reasonable in our opinion. And when you need a break from using the poles or are exploring the city, they can easily be disassembled and stowed in your backpack until you need their assistance again.
